Ancient Greek Mythology

Greek pantheon of the god

Welcome to the marvelous world of Ancient Greek Mythology!

It's surprising how many aspects of Greek mythology and names from Greek tales remain in our modern culture. Once you start notice them, you'll see them everywhere!

The Greek gods, Greek goddesses, Greek heroes, and their various adventures were tools for the ancient Greeks to make sense of their world. The Greek gods and goddesses were like the world's first superheroes with amazing powers: they could control all of the forces of nature, create magical beasts, turn regular people to stone.... all of that before breakfast.

I am a teacher and a mythology nut. You're reading words from someone who has studied mythology for years. Let me take you by the virtual "hand" and give you a tour!

For instance:

  • Modern movies tell stories from Greek myths and history (Troy, 300, Clash of the Titans, Immortals)... or borrow a title from them (Prometheus).
  • Modern buildings use Greek temple-based design. The White House is one of them, it's Palladian like the Acropolis, Athena's temple in Athens, Greece.
  • We use phrases like "Achilles heel" and "Herculean effort". (Pssst....Why is it called an Achilles heel? This site will help you find out!)
  • We even call our cars "chariots"!

It's also fun to note that the ancient Greek deities were far from perfect: they had family quarrels, personality flaws, and insecurities just like we do!

So, why are you here today? Chances are, it's because Greek mythology and its characters have captured your imagination.

Or, perhaps you are a student researching information on myths and legends for an assignment.

In either case, read on! You have come to the right place. And you're in for a surprise -- these are great stories!
